Design Culture Now Poster

Sketches

I started out by doing a bunch of quick thumbnail sketches _ I tried out some different possible compositions in which the title is first in the visual hierarchy (*moSt important) _ It will probably make the most sense for the title to be where I use the ugly/ vernacular font (it will stand out the most)

- In my next set of sketches, I focused on the more simple layouts as they feel cleanerthe fewer the non-typographic elements the better (since this is a typography assignment) - I like the idea of using string ( maybe photocopied) to add some texture and to connect the body of texts - However, it might be cliche

- Another idea that I had was to scatter the text boxes in and around a large title - It could be done in a random, spontaneous way ... or in a more structure way (around a criss-cross or diagonals) - I tried to play with the string idea and make it more understated, but it is still not doing much for me (I feel like I have seen it before)

-Upon reflection, I wanted to go a different, more interesting direction maybe I could use the photocopy method with ripped or crumpled paper Oust for the title)- I could also make a folded paper structure of some sort (more structured)-origami or a finger game?

Version #1

- In an attempt to reflect the shape of the paper, I drew some

unique geometric text boxes-they look interesting, but they

are still too overpowered by the title

- By adding a dark, contrasting textbox for the secondary feature

in the poster's hierarchy, the title is better balanced out

- The composition was lacking movement (it was looking

stagnant), so I thought up a fun idea: to have the text look

as though it is being flown around by paper airplanes (which

also goes well with the paper background of the title)

- I got a new idea: use a spare paper scan for the background-

it adds more texture and movement (without needing

to including overly literal elements like paper planes)

- To complement the background, I started trying to warp the

text to mirror the paper folds

- The idea is not fully realized,

Version #2

Version #3

- The TA thought that my grid layout was too

much-he likes the title and address as scans,

but not the rest of the text

- He also did not like the handwritten type, however,

the project brief calls for a handwritten/

ugly/vernacular ...

- His idea was to replicate a subway sign (which

works well considering the Design Culture Now

concert is in New York)
